Hi.
When I tried to play something on youtube just now I was unable to hear anything from my speakers. This has happened before and a friend fixed the volume slider so that thing would play again, but I’m wondering if there’s a way for someone with only screen-reader assistance to do this? If someone can shed some light on this issue I’d be grateful. Thanks for reading.
That all depends on what screen reader you are using.
I'm using JAWS 16.
you can't just turn up your speakers to hear you tube? Somebody on here would know how to adjust volume on your computer but for listening to music, I just turn up the speakers.
Not screen reader, but PC or Mac is the question.
You are on a PC, so you don't actually have to worry about the slider on the YouTube page provided you are the only user.
Windows 7 and up have controls in the volume mixer that control the web browser you decide to use.
Press insert +F11 to get to system tray.
Press S until you get to speakers.
Press enter, and you'll be on your volume mixer.
Press enter again and the first selection will be your computers main volume.
You'll use tab to get to the volume you want.
You know that, because, for example, if you are using IE it says internet explorer. Fire Fox you adjust the flash player.
Be careful not to mute anything.
Once you have it adjusted, simply press escape.
I should probably explain that I'm not having a problem with my computer speakers because I can hear my screen-reader and play mp3 files just fine, but if I want to listen to something on youtube I'm not getting any sound at all. I've tried pressing the unjmute button on several different things and that doesn't seem to work, either, so I figure it has to be something to do with the volume slider that I'm told is on their pages. Thanks for trying to help, though.
This is how I can adjust the volume slider on YouTube with JAWS. Go on a YouTube page that you want to control then press Jaws key and z, this turns off the virtual curser. Then tab until you hear the controls or theater mode. To adjust the volume use you’re up and down arrow keys. Right and left will rewind and fast forward. Also you can use the numbers on the top row of the keyboard to jump to different parts of the video. PS I use my jaws key board layout as laptop. Turn the curser back on after the video is done with the same Jaws key and z.
luckyluc20, if you arrow to where JAWS reads "volume" on the youtube page, it should say "volume" plus whatever the percentage is. If the volume is at max, it will read "volume 100%". What is JAWS reading? If it is less than 100%, you can press enter where it reads "volume +percentage" and use your up and down arrows to increase or decrease the volume. When you reach the desired volume, press escape and then navigate the page as normal.
Hope this helps.
Anyone have any tips on skipping the adds on Youtube? I use JAWS.
sometimes there is a button just above the pause button that says "skip ad". It doesn't always appear right away, I tend to refresh the page a few times in the first ten seconds of the ad especially to see if the button shows up. you could also use the time indicator to advance, press enter on it and use the up/down and right/left arrows to advance but I don't know if that will work skipping ads. Remember to hit escape when you're done to navigate as usual on the page.
actually, it is nothing to do with either pc or mac, it is something to do with screen
readers. What screen reader you use determine how you solve the problem. With Mac,
there is no problem, because, the volume slide bar is often on 100% by default. And, how
you do it on jaws might be different on window eyes, and nvda, and system access.
Wait, how do you skip an ad on youtube using Jaws? I hate the ads especially when I'm listening to an album on youtube.
My volume is at 100% by default unless as I've said someone one sighted changes it.
Also, you have several suggestions.
Come back and tell us what worked.
I'm always interested in the results.
Everyone controls things differently.
I tried all the methods suggested here, and they all work with Jaws 16 and Windows 8 or IE 11.
The only thing for me is to see the volume number, I have to use the reading key key and the number 8 to read it each time I moved it.
Again, mine is set to 100%, so I just use the controls I suggested, but the others work too.
Great.
Here is one last thing that might help you get things back to normal so it is easy to manage with the provided suggestions here.
You can set your browser back to defaults.
When you do this, all settings and such go back as new, so at that point your YouTube volume should be at 100% and not muted or whatever.
Speaking of muted, you might click enter on the button that says muted and see if the sound come on if you have adjusted the volume to a level you know it should be working.
As you can see by the post here, it is very accessible, and so you can set it.
If you’d like instructions for setting your browser to defaults, ask here.
Maybe ask other users of your computer to leave it as is and use the speaker volume, or put it back, after use, if it is difficult for you.
I can never find the skip ad button. I have gotten lucky a few times but that was with the JAWS curser and never have seen it with the virtual pc curser. I'm also wondering what is the reading key you press with the #8?
Well, thank you For reels!
WRM2012, try refreshing the page every five or ten seconds, sometimes the button takes a while to show. Also, there are adds that youtube doesn't allow you to skip.
how did you find about the thator mode? like how do people find these things ?
Pretty sure I just Googled JAWS and youtube. Sometimes it is just that easy.
oh wow, cool.
It also seems to depend on what video you are using.
Different ones have different things that pop up in the play menue, I'll call it.
Just yesterday, I could see I could skip the ad.
On others, I couldn't, and still on others, there was no ad to skip at all.
So, I suppose you learn things about it by using it.
